Uncle Moon
The classic 1967 Velvet Underground 'banana' album (The Velvet Underground & Nico) is quite special for playwright and former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel. Its impact on him and Czech culture can be noted by the fact that the overthrow of the Communists in the late-80s was known as the "Velvet Revolution." He once told the Velvet's songwriter Lou Reed, "Did you know that I am president because of you?" As a part of the festival celebrating the work of Havel, UNCLE MOON, a five-piece, eclectic downtown art band, will perform their special acoustic version of the 'Banana' album. Fascinated with reinterpreting well-known songs, Uncle Moon has often found radical new insight into existing musical material including the work of Thelonious Monk, Butthole Surfers, Cole Porter, and Liz Phair. As guitarist and lead singer Trey Kay explained, "we were interested in the idea of taking on a classic rock album and treating it like it was a complete work of art similar to an opera or a symphony." Uncle Moon will perform all eleven songs from the 'Banana' album in new arrangements for violin, saxophone, accordion, acoustic guitar, and bass. More Info at Joe's Pub Back to Top | | |
