Build & Greta Gertler: Chamber
Greta Gertler is an ex-pat Australian with "[a] spacious voice and a welcome weakness for lushly orchestrated seventies-era singer-songwriter pop" says The New Yorker. NPR recently chose Greta's song "Veselka" (about the
much-beloved 24-hour East Village diner) as its 'Song of the Day', and WNYC featured Greta performing live on 'Soundcheck' as "a rising name in New York's downtown singer-songwriter scene."
Greta is now in the studio, working on her fifth album, "The Universal Thump", with drummer/producer, Adam D Gold (Build, Gutbucket, The Exotic Profiles), Jonathan Maron (bass) and Pete Galub (guitar). Greta and Adam recently returned to NYC from a duo tour of Europe and Australia, premiering songs from "The Universal Thump" to thrilled audiences worldwide.
Build is a Brooklyn-based indie-classical band led by composer/violinist Matt McBane which Steve Smith described in Time Out New York as “a new quintet that straddles the increasingly permeable line between chamber music and instrumental rock.” Build released its self-titled debut album on New Amsterdam Records in the summer of 2008 to critical acclaim from both esteemed classical music critics and indie bloggers alike including Bloomberg News’ Alan Rich who praised its “skittery, unpredictable and utterly charming musical inventions”. In addition to performing with Greta for the first time, Build will be premiering several new pieces of their own this evening.

Tonight’s concert is a collaboration between singer-songwriter Greta Gertler and the indie-classical band Build. Instead of the usual separate-sets double bill, Build’s compositions and Greta’s songs will be woven amongst each other to create a new and emotionally powerful evening of music. In addition to performing separately, Greta and Build will join forces in premiering new string arrangements by Build’s Matt McBane for songs from Greta’s forthcoming album “The Universal Thump”. Throughout the show the common thread will be drummer Adam Gold who is a member of both groups.
